Description

A beautifully preserved bill of exchange issued by the Banco de España (Bank of Spain) on 22 June 1881 in Madrid, payable to Barcelona. The instrument is drawn for 2,528 reales and features classic 19th-century Spanish copperplate handwriting.


Prominently affixed is a brown 50 centimos revenue stamp overprinted with an oval date stamp, as well as a Banco de España allegorical vignette, and purple oval Barcelona receiving office stamp marked “10650.” The bill is hand-signed by officials and marked "PAGADO" ("Paid") in blue.

Historical Context:
