Description

Scarce and historically significant Second of Exchange issued by the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) from its Manila branch on 29 August 1883, payable to Messrs. Wm. Brandts Sons & Co. in the amount of £84.7.2 Sterling. Drawn on HSBC’s London office at 31 Lombard Street.

This bill of exchange reflects the global commercial networks of British banks in the late 19th century, particularly in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1865, HSBC played a pivotal role in facilitating international trade across Asia and Europe.

Beautifully printed with an ornate emblem of Britannia at left, and bearing the printed signature of the issuing Agent. The note includes bilingual text in English and Spanish ("La 1a de cambio, " "El sello correspondiente"), a reflection of the Philippines’ colonial status under Spain.
