Description

Beautifully preserved official bill of exchange issued in Copenhagen on 25 May 1899 by the Danish Ministry of Finance, Second Department (Ministère des Finances, 2me Département), for the amount of 2,296.05 francs. The payment is directed to Messieurs Rothschild Frères in Paris and is issued on behalf of the Ministry of the Danish Navy (Ministère de la Marine Danoise).

Attractive typographic layout featuring the official crowned coat of arms of the Ministry, elaborate calligraphy, and a striking blue boxed bank stamp. Signed on behalf of the Finance Ministry by an official representative (“en l’absence du directeur”).

This document reflects the high-level financial interactions between Scandinavian government departments and major European banking houses, especially the Rothschilds, at the turn of the century.
